BDPA Detroit is a historically strong chapter when it comes to the national high school computer competition (HSCC) championships. In fact, there is only one chapter (Southern Minnesota) with more championships than Detroit. One reason for the success in Motor City is the strong coaches and students in the program. One of the strong students over the past three years (2008-2010) has been Matthew Clark.

Matthew shared his thoughts on his HSCC career with us.

I just learned from the folks over at Black Web 2.0 that I'm one of the Top 50 Amazing Tech Tastemakers.

You may recall that we told you about the Top 50 Amazing Tech Tastemakers campaign a few weeks ago. Since then a number of you took the time to cast your vote on who you think should be a Top 50 Tech Tastemaker and the results and activity have been both interesting and exciting to watch.   The voting ended yesterday and we ended up as #25 on the list!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving I'd love to share with you the benefits and power of two simple words. THANK YOU.

They are two words that have the power to transform our health, happiness, athletic performance and success. Research shows that grateful people are happier and more likely to maintain good friendships. A state of gratitude, according to research by the Institute of HeartMath, also improves the heart's rhythmic functioning, which helps us to reduce stress, think more clearly under pressure and heal physically. It's actually physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time. When you are grateful you flood your body and brain with emotions and endorphins that uplift and energize you rather than the stress hormones that drain you.

There’s no secret in the formula: For the most part, the more IT skills you have, the better pay you get. The following alphabetical gallery lists the top 25 skills in technology with increased demand in pay for the third quarter. These are non-certified skills, meaning they don’t necessarily require a technology worker to have a certification, yet they do require experience. These skills were sourced by Foote Partners, a Vero Beach, Fla., technology research company that tracks certified and non-certified IT skills.

I spent eight years in the Senior Executive Service (SES) with the federal government before striking out to start my own company. It is difficult to travel a career path in the information technology (IT) industry through the glass ceiling to the executive level.

One way to make that journey is with the help of a mentor. As such, I can sincerely recommend that any African American IT professional that is currently in a management position ... who feels that (s)he has executive potential should take a moment to learn about the Executive Protege Program (EPP) offered by the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF).

I love to learn. I consider myself a lifelong learner. This is why I love to read. I feel that I can learn anything if I can get my hands on a book. In my opinion, the day you stop learning is the day you die.

Most of what I read has to do with personal development since I intend to continue to improve myself as long as I am on the planet.  My goal is to be the best Kai Dupé that I can be before my time is done. The idea that people who continue to learn are the most successful has been documented for many years.

Recent research by Jane Margolis and Mark Warschauer regarding why certain groups are under-represented in computing suggests that it is a social issue as much as it is an access issue. Much has been written regarding the achievement gap between African Americans and their counterparts.

In virtually every metric of educational achievement African Americans are behind. In this knowledge-based economy, this concern has moved forward with concerns regarding digital equity, and the digital divide, the gap between African Americans and their contemporaries in terms of adoption of technology.

David Segura shared, "I am very thankful to continue to work with this administration on initiatives that I am personally passionate about in creating significant growth for minority-owned businesses. Implementing these strategies at this time is critical to the on-going success of the United States. Many of the next great innovations will need to develop from the minority business community and reach domestic and global markets."

The Job Market is Improving for African Americans in IT. When the economy started getting pummeled a few years ago, the IT job market also took some hits, but 2010 may turn out to be its comeback year, says Wayne Hicks, executive director of the BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF). BETF is a nonprofit charity founded in 1992 to support the education and technical programs of the Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) organization.

BDPA has a strong history of providing programs to engage high school students. Our national high school computer competition has been going on for over 25 years. We added the BDPA IT Showcase about eight years ago. My hope is that BDPA will participate at some level in the 2011 Imagine Cup.

I think that most BETF-Blog readers will agree that one area that we have not been as active or strong is in the technology-based support and education of elementary school students. However, that is beginning to change in Richmond, Virginia. BDPA Richmond chapter has been working for the last decade on teaching concepts of science, technology and robotics to elementary school students.

It appears to be paying off. Here is a testimonial that was recently posted on the BDPA Richmond chapter YahooGroup.

Hotep!

This e-newsletter is produced by the BDPA Education and Technology Foundationon any day that an event is occurring around the country.  Today the eyes of BDPA nation are on Indianapolis, IN.

Last night was a wake-up call that all of the advances made in the past can be taken away in a nanosecond if we don't continue to be vigilant and proactive in our efforts.  When politicians start to say that they want to 'take back our country' ... it makes me wonder who they are taking it back from?  More often than not it is a person with my level of melanin.

BLACK FACES IN WHITE PLACES

“Randal Pinkett and Jeffrey Robinson’s book has much to say about solutions to our challenges in the Age of Obama. Don’t miss it!” —Cornel West, Princeton University

“There are three types of people in this world: those who make the rules, those who follow the rules, and those who redefine the rules. Drs. Pinkett and Robinson have given us a revolutionary roadmap for people of color to accomplish the latter, and to do so in a way that benefits everyone.” —William H. Cosby, Jr., Ed.D. and Camille O. Soulclap to Stephanie Lampkin for sharing with us a 'great news' message about the work of BDPA Charlotte chapter member Kevin Robinson and his colleagues at Microsoft. She wrote:

Microsoft Charlotte Campus launched our successful Citizen Schools apprenticeship What is a Computer Really? The first sessions were led by Ed Lau, Pierre Debnam and Ricky Mohamed of Premier National Services and Kevin Robinson of BCS Operations.

The students were extremely enthusiastic and highly engaged. We are partnering with Citizen Schools at Eastway Middle School to give students 21st century skills. Ed taught students about the hardware components of a computer assisted by Ricky, Pierre and Kevin, who led hands-on activities and ice breakers.

The seemingly increased popularity of the Bing search engine made me wonder…Why?  Why Microsoft a computer services company, the second most valued company in the marketplace (EXXON – 1st), go head-to-head with the most popular search engine “Google”?   A company that did not exist fifteen years ago and now has an estimated valuation of $11 billion!!!

So I conducted a 30-day comparison of Bing v. Google.  By searching a specific topic each day several times a day, I was intrigued there was such disparity.  Primarily, the difference was based on a user vs. a corporate (enterprise) search. When people think of a search engine –they simply search; however, very often times not returning the data they were looking for.  Is that a result of the algorithms of the search engine, the person searching OR the way the engine interprets YOU and what it thinks your looking for?  Personally, I think it’s the latter. However, both seem to become more educated about me and that is representative of the ad surrounding my searches.

"The future's so bright I gotta wear shades?"  Well, pull out your Oakleys, my friend, because career prospects are looking up for network professionals, and hiring managers are looking for skilled people.

According to the fourth quarter 2010 Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Index and Skills Report, the technical skill set most in demand by a majority of CIOs is networking. What's more, network managers will see average starting salaries rise 4.3 percent, to the range of $79,250 to $109,500 per year, according to the Robert Half Technology Salary Guide 2011.

I learned about Tech Corps Ohio during a recent conversation with a member of the BDPA Columbus chapter leadership team. It was suggested that I get in touch with the Tech Corps Ohio state director -- Lisa Chambers. I used social networking to reach out to Ms. Chambers and we're scheduled to sit down with one another on November 18 to see if there are ways that BDPA Education and Technology Foundation (BETF) can support Tech Corps Ohio. I think that she is interested in expanding the concept to the greater Cincinnati area.

Anyhow, I thought I would share this orientation video with our BETF-Blog readers. It gives you some insight into what Tech Corps Ohio is all about.

Is there a Tech Corps operation in your state? Can you envision a strategic alliance between Tech Corps and your local BDPA chapter?

CIO — One of the reasons you may not like to network is because, in asking others for help with a job search, you feel you're imposing on your contacts (and their contacts). But viewing networking as an imposition demonstrates several common misconceptions about the practice: that only one person benefits from the exchange; that job seekers have nothing to give to the people with whom they're networking; and that the people being contacted dont want to meet or see the job seeker.

In fact, says Ford Myers, president of career coaching firm Career Potential, just the opposite is true. The benefits of networking often extend to all parties involved. Networking meetings and phone calls can be as beneficial for the contact as they are for the job seeker, says Myers.
"When done properly, networking is not about taking but giving," he says.

Yes, tech geeks read things other than Wired and Gizmodo! Entire genres and subgenres exist that peer into where technological advances have come from, where they are, where they may go and what they may be like in worlds beyond the known. Some (but not all!) fans of gadgetry enjoy peppering their literary intake with narratives that pique their curiosity regarding everything from bioengineering to life in an international computer juggernaut. And all that lay between.

WASHINGTON – The jobs crisis has brought an unwelcome discovery for many unemployed Americans: Job openings in their old fields exist. Yet they no longer qualify for them.
They're running into a trend that took root during the recession. Companies became more productive by doing more with fewer workers. Some asked staffers to take on a broader array of duties — duties that used to be spread among multiple jobs. Now, someone who hopes to get those jobs must meet the new requirements.

As a result, some database administrators now have to manage network security.

Accountants must do financial analysis to find ways to cut costs.

Factory assembly workers need to program computers to run machinery.
