Sponsored by Bank of America, the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing recognizes young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. By generating visibility for these young women in their local communities, the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing encourages their continued interest in computing, attracts the attention and support of educational and corporate institutions, and emphasizes at a personal level the importance of women's participation.

All US high school young women (grades 9-12) are invited to apply.

Complete information on the award is available at http://www.ncwit.org/award including Spanish language versions of the Award promotional materials.

Awardees are selected for their demonstrated, outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology/computing; solid leadership ability; good academic history; and plans for post-secondary education.

IBM Master the Mainframe Contest 2009

To: Blacks Gone Geek Readers

I thought you find the message below would be of interest as we "inspire our youth to pursue technology careers". Is anyone already registered to participate in the IBM Academic Initiative?

Let me know if you decide to participate. There may be others who would like to partner with you.

IBM is currently rolling out its fifth annual Master the Mainframe Contest this
fall semester, with over $27,000 in prizes up for grabs. The major focus of the
contest is to introduce students to an area of the computer field that they may
not have had much experience with, and which is currently in a long-term hiring
phase as the current generation of mainframe systems programmers begins to
retire. If you think any of your students might be interested in checking it out
(IBM designed the contest to be NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY), registration is now
open from the contest homepage: http://ibm.com/university/contest.

This is the third time the contest has been open for high school students. In
2007, Sushen Patel, a high school junior, was the overall winner of the contest,
beating over 1,750 participants from universities, colleges and high school
across the U.S. and Canada.

Students who do well in the contest will also be invited to put their resumes
into IBM's Student Opportunity System, a recruiting tool available to all of
IBM's clients and business partners.

The contest begins on Monday, October 5, and allows students to log into a
mainframe system from their home or computer lab. If you have any questions
about the contest, you can reach the IBM Academic Initiative System z program at
zskills@us.ibm.com.

Good luck to all students who participate!

Mike
